Cal Poly's Building Permit Program formalizes all project planning and code compliance reviews performed by various departments, auxiliaries and committees. Facility Services administers this program.
Campus construction projects are accomplished in one of three ways:
• A Public Works contract administered by Facilities Planning
• A non-maintenance construction project built by Facility Services and charged back to the requesting department
• A building permit issued to departments and auxiliaries who wish to undertake projects with their own resources
Activities Requiring a Campus Building Permit:
• Building Additions, Alterations, Remodels and/or Tenant Improvements.
• Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing or Building Additions or Alterations.
• Equipment Installation Requiring More Than Plug and Cord.
• Activity That Will Disturb Any Building Surface (Interior or Exterior).
• Signage Installation, Modification or Removal.
• Satellite Dish or Antenna Installations, Modifications or Removals on Campus.
• Activities Involving Building or Roof Structures.
• Landscaping and Related Improvements or Modifications, Including Drainage.
• Garden Walls and Retaining Walls.
• Patios, Decks and Fences.
• Awnings and Trellises.
• Any Underground or Overhead Work.
• Any Activity That May Add, Alter or Modify ADA Requirements.
• Temporary Membrane Structures, Tents and Canopies.
• System Furniture Installation.
• Any Activity In or Adjacent to a designated Waterway, Creek or Drainage Route.
Process Summary for Building Permits
• Requester submits a project (service) request to Facility Services (FS), who forwards a building permit application to the requester.
• Applicant returns the completed application, along with plans and drawings
• FS reviews information and sends Building Permit Request Confirmation to applicant
• Once all reviews are completed, FS determines whether or not to issue the building permit. If the permit is issued-all conditions, if any-are noted and attached to the permit (See Building Permit )
• The project is assigned to a Facilities Project Manager, who coordinates all construction activities and inspections.

Facilities Management Internal Permit Process
• If your project is being built by Facilities, the Building Permit process is internal. The process is the same but the customer is not required to act.
